On Your Spokes: Frequently Asked Questions about the Cycle/Footpath Campaign
Why are we campaigning for a cycle/footpath?
Right now, apart from driving, there is no safe way to get from our village to Tesco or Midsomer Norton. That means more cars on the road and worse air quality. A combined cycle/footpath would change all of this: providing a leisure facility as well as a safe, healthy way to reach shops and friends.
Hasn’t this been tried before?
Yes, back in the 2010s. But due to the Global Financial Crisis, no funding was available. It appears that there might now be funding either through the West of England Combined Authority (which appears to broadly supportive) or through the Somer Valley Enterprise Zone (if it ever happens.)
Who wants it?
In the recent village survey, 82% of respondents wanted it. This is consistent with the earlier attempt. In addition, it turns out that there are a very large number of cyclists in Farrington Gurney, with some households having more bikes than people!
Where will it go?
There are multiple possibilities for the route and this will be determined if the basic idea gets enough support from funding authorities. But the big win is that, by connecting to Midsomer Norton, it connects our village to the National Cycle Network to Bath, Frome and beyond in one direction and, via Pitway Lane, to over 100 miles of cycle path in Somerset.
Last time there was a concern that, because this would enable kids to walk to school, we would lose the school bus. Is that what would happen?
No. School bus provision would remain.
What can I do to help?
On occasion, we will hold meetings to discuss how to proceed; we might also want to generate some photo opportunities for publicity. It would be great if we can call on you (and your bikes) to come along for these. So please subscribe to FarringtonGreen and we will keep you posted. We promise you won’t be drowning in email; we will only contact you when there is something to say or do.
Also, of course, please encourage friends and family to do likewise – whether they live here or in Midsomer Norton because, let’s not forget, MSN will be a big beneficiary too!
